Philosophers warn us about building on bad foundations. Architects and builders too. Its kind of common sense, isn’t it? Take a building. Each part depends on the foundations below it. If it has good, deep, sure foundations, the building will stand, no matter what comes against it. No matter how good the building, if the foundation isn’t right, all will fall away.
Jesus had thoughts on this too:
Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them in practice is like a wise man who builds his house on a rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who builds his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash. Matthew 7v24-27.
The point is clear - anything not built on the rock will not stand.
We build such magnificent towers, don’t we? We put so much time and energy into our careers, relationships, families, but what happens when they fall apart? That gravel, sand, clay and porous rock that once looked safe and sound is so easily washed away. Then you have the difficult task of picking yourself up and starting the rebuilding process again brick by brick. If only there were an easier way.
Being a Christian involves digging down deep, building on the one foundation you can rely on. Only the rock can withstand the storms.
David encountered many storms, some of his own making, but in faith he could say,
Though you have made me see troubles, many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. Psalm 71v20
I have found this sure foundation in my life. On him alone can I depend. He is faithful, his love follows me, he watches over me, he has plans for me, he lives in me, he will never forsake me. God is with me during all my storms – past, present and future. I will never be shaken.
May you know this comfort too.
